regt coat Dear Prospective Member:

Thank you for considering enlisting in Colonel Ogden's First New Jersey Regiment! We are a 501(c)(3) charity whose purpose is to educate the public about the material culture and history of the actual Revolutionary War Continental army unit we portray.

We are delighted that you are thinking of joining us to interpret the experiences of New Jersey common soldiers or camp followers in the fight for our Independence. This is an exciting and rewarding hobby and we hope that our Regiment will provide you with the opportunity to enjoy it to the fullest. We enjoy each other's company and we play well with others. We welcome men, women and families (though not their pets). There are plenty of opportunities in this organization for you to try something new or further develop a particular interest in this period of history.

Every reenactment group has its own character and approach to historical interpretation. The 1st New Jersey is a reliable, veteran regiment in The Continental Line. Our members come from across the Mid-Atlantic States and areas of southern New England. Some of us have been reenacting for many years and others are just getting started. We take pride both in the quality of our impressions and the supportive culture of our unit. We strive to incorporate new research and better documentation into our historical interpretations and have knowledgeable members who will help you make good choices as you start to acquire the clothing and equipment you will need to fully participate.

Our primary impression is of the 1st New Jersey Regiment in 1777 during the Philadelphia Campaign. We sometimes present other impressions such as militia or field as New Jersey light infantry troops in the 1781 Virginia Campaign. Our Clothing and Equipment Guidelines and Standards and Regimental Coat Construction Guidelines are a great place to start to familiarize yourself with what New Jersey Continental soldiers in this time period were issued and carried. Both civilian and militia guidelines are also available to help with these impressions. To help you get started, we also have a limited amount of clothing and equipment that belongs to the unit or to some of its members that can be loaned to new recruits.
We would rather you take the time to get the right stuff for your impression than gear up too fast with purchases you may later regret.

Gavin Pic Each year we have a full schedule of activities, ranging from interpretation at historic sites and marching in ceremonial events to large scale battle reenactments over an entire weekend. Some events happen every year, such as Monmouth, Germantown, and Trenton, while others may bring us as far afield as Yorktown, Virginia, or Fort Ticonderoga, New York. There is plenty of variety, from garrison to campaign settings. Not everyone attends every event – we all have responsibilities to work and family that sometimes take priority – but we do try for a strong showing at each event on our schedule.

We hope you will decide to join us. If you would like to take the next step, download our MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION here. Our recruitment officer will be in touch to help you get started with provisional membership and in the Regiment and connect you with a mentor to help you be safe and effective in your portrayal.
We look forward to welcoming you to ranks of the First New Jersey!

Your Most Humble & Obedient Servant,
Timothy Abbott
